When I was a kid I used to have the luxury of reading books multiple times. Many summers were spent re-reading books like Dune, The Lord of the Rings, To Kill a Mockingbird, Watership Down, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and others. Nowadays, I have so little free time for reading (usually just 15-30 minutes before bed) and such a huge pile of unread books that I feel guilty for even glancing through the pages of a previously read novel. It does happen on occasion, though; I’m sure when the latest adaptation of The Hobbit hits theaters (whenever that happens) I’m going to have to read through Tolkien’s brilliant tome again.
Of course, I’m leaving out comic books from this discussion. I’ve read the trade paperbacks of Watchmen, V for Vendetta, The Dark Knight Returns, Cages, Akira, Bone, Creature Tech, Cerebus and Usagi Yojimbo, to name a few, multiple times and will continue to read them in the future. Many trades and graphic novels just don’t give me the same guilt factor as books do. I’m not exactly sure what the reason is for that. Maybe something to explore in a future comic strip…
FIRST! bahahaha. yay!
woo! congrats, Jaeh! π
er, anyway, that ‘first’ thing sorted out…
I love rereading books. I re read my small insignificant collection here at home over and over again when I can’t buy new ones.
I get cranky when I can’t read books when I want to.
i’m sure this isn’t news to you, but it sounds like you’d find a library extremely useful, Jaeh. if you’re done reading everything in your collection, go check some books out, especially if you’re feeling cranky. π
they also usually have a bunch of books for cheap; the one by my work sells hardcovers for 99 cents or you can just swap one of yours for one of theirs. decent selection that updates every week, too. i’ve seen many libraries with this same system, so hopefully you have a local one that does something similar.
I keep forgetting I have my University library card. ha, ha. I’m not a fan of borrowing books, though. I’d rather have my own copy of books – I like collecting them, letting them sit in my room until dust collects and I decide to reread them again.
We don’t really have a good local library (aside from my Uni’s, anyway) and so that posed a huge problem for me when I wasn’t in college yet.
On the upside, bargain book sales are *everywhere*. It’s hard to scour through piles and piles and piles of cheap paperbacks that aren’t my type, but I’ll manage. All for my books. π
I agree with you Jaeh, I know library’s are wonderful things, but I prefer to own my own copy and have it handy when ever I get the urge to reread. Terry Pratchett discworld series is one of those rereadable favorites, along with, of course, Hobbit and LoTR and many many others.
i agree with you and Lily, Jaeh – collecting books is awesome. i have so many boxes and shelves filled with hard & softcover books it’s ridiculous. it’s why i don’t own a Kindle, Nook or e-Reader – i like physical books. the cover artwork, smell and texture of the pages can’t be replicated on a screen. at least not yet, anyway. π
Speaking about the smell, I cant really understand why havent someone made a perfume with smell of freshly printed book. Geeks would go crazy for someone smelling like a new book π
heheh. yeah, they could have a whole line of fragrances, Eddie: fantasy, romance, mystery, medical… (okay maybe not that last one). π
Dude if only we had libraries like that. First problem is that the English section of most libraries in my town is pretty much nonexistent and second, the books they do have are mostly not the books for me π I like owning books as well, and you cant tell I have read a book (even a paperback) by the looks of the cover, because all my books are in perfect shape and condition (Im kinda weird that way)
And even in bookstores its not that great, for example Im looking for Dune for 2 years now and it is nowhere to be found, no bookstore has it (they have the rest of the series though, but never the original Dune) and the same thing goes for some collection from H.P.Lovecraft.
i’m the same way, Eddie! i treat my books just like my comics – i keep them in pristine condition, with no wear on the pages or creases on the spine or cover. and most of my favorite hardcovers have brodart jackets on ’em.
it’s sacrilege that Dune hasn’t been in your bookstore for the past 2 years. sacrilege i tell you!
I see you have Patrick Rothfuss “The Name of the Wind” in the comic. Good book. Definitely a must read.
another vote for Patrick Rothfuss’s novel! looks like this is my next book to read, Tommy. π
You haven’t read it yet?! Madness!
I’m actually rereading The Hitchhikerβs Guide to the Galaxy right now, I’ve always wanted to read Watership Down… maybe i should have read that first.. instead of REreading a book I’ve already read. ><
i started rereading the HHGG series when the movie came out a few years back, Joenis, but only managed to read through HHGG and The Restaurant at the End of the Universe. still thinking about rereading the rest, though. such great books. π
you should definitely read Watership Down, and see the film if you haven’t already. both the film and book (i have a 1st edition US hardcover) are awesome and among my favs. i picked up the sequel, Tales From Watership Down but never read it since i always seem to end up going through the original novel instead. someday!
Typically I hear that the books are always better than the films. Would you say that’s the case with Watership Down? Cos I’ve been tempted to pick up the movie several times.. but always stop myself and say “read it first… just wait and read it first, you’ll be happier.”
…to which end, I NEVER have time to read.. so I never get to it. BUT if you said it was better, I may just suck it up and check it out.
You should finish Hitchhikers Guide… much better than the film. π
i still make time to reread some of my favorite books but i also make room for new authors too.(this is a subject we could go on and on about.)
yeah, definitely trying to allot more time for new books, t_d. i just need longer days!
I notice Jefbot has the Name of the Wind on his pile. there’s a bit of hype around it and you can make what you want of that, but I did enjoy it quite a bit, enough so that I’ve gone back through and am reading it aloud to my wife (this is a thing we do. we’re also working our way through the complete Sherlock Holmes). it is taking a while for book 2 to come out so beware of that, though I guess anyone who reads much fantasy is used to that. it’s the trapping of the genre (more so than sci fi), everything has to be a big series. π thankfully, this one’s only a trilogy… For myself, I’m currently reading Steven Erikson’s Malazan Book of the Fallen series. only on the first book but so far enjoying it.
i wondered if anyone would identify Patrick Rothfuss’s novel in the strip, Jed! glad to hear you enjoyed it since it’s at the top of my to-read pile. it’s between that and Guillermo Del Toro’s The Strain.
as for the strip itself, i do think it’s cool that you didn’t just cut and paste in the covers of these books. i see that kind of thing from time to time, and it isn’t necesarrily a bad thing i don’t guess, but i like that you played about a bit. the contrast of the xeroxed in thing tends to look a bit jarring to me.
thanks for noticing and commenting on that, Jed. i agree – it totally takes me out of a strip when i see real covers to books and videogames, or posters and backgrounds cut-and-pasted into hand-drawn artwork, too. takes a bit more time to draw those things, but i find it’s worth it. nice to know it’s appreciated. π
Books are thy friend.
…
If the subject interest you, of course. I got a little library of my own, but like Jef, I need to get some time to re-read them. Right now 24-hours-a-day is not enough for my current hetic lifestyle!!!!! >___<
(PLEASE!!! The above is just a statement of why I – as in ME, MYSELF, I – don't enjoy series. I'm not saying they are bad or worthless or nothing of the sort. Just saying my opinion. Geez!!)
My latest acquisition is "Gothic Charm School: An Essential Guide for Goths and Those Who Love Them". This book should have come out years ago – so I could have given it to my father before his "why are you this way?" speech got perfected.
*evil laugh of doom*
“Books are thy friend.” <- most def, Sonitan.
yeah, it'd be nice if we had 36-hour days and didn't need as much sleep so we had more time to do things like reading. alas, we gotta make do with what we got. *weep*
“Gothic Charm School”!? maybe i should pick this up so i understand you and your evil laugh of doom better. hmmm… π
I sareched a bunch of sites and this was the best.
Bone, by the gods, I love that series.
Seconded
thirded!
Bone totally got me back into reading comics after i lapsed for a few years, mercenary. recently reread it when i got the huge omnibus. still so good.
I dont have unreaded books, and the good ones are rereaded many times. How to find time? Easy, STOP WATCHING TV! You save electricity while unfornately massacreing the trees if you buy new books, what doesnt appear to be your need right now. You cut off corporate subliminal control. You… Whichever works for you, Im sure you can find something. Books rule.
It’s all a matter of priorities. We don’t have TV and I still don’t have much time for reading because I have a family and my knitting/crocheting and work and internet friends. These things all take time, too. So unless you are ONLY going to read (which is ok too if that is your top priority) there still is not that much time. π Books on tape/CD/mp3 are great though because then you can at least multitask. It is easy to listen to a book and knit at the same time. I actually know people who can read a physical book and knit at the same time, but I’m not anywhere near that good. Or maybe the projects I pick just don’t lend themselves to that.
Anyway! Great strip, Jeff. There are few books that I’ve reread, but there are a few. The Lloyd Alexander Prydain books are one set – that’s where we got the name Taran from for our son. Right now I’m reading American Gods, sort of as part of the 1b1t thing on Twitter, although I haven’t participated in any of the chats about it. Cool book so far!
I should have mentioned REAL friends in my list of things that sap my time. My list makes me sound like a recluse!
agreed, shanna – even without tv and only seeing friends once or twice a week, i still barely have any time to read a lengthy novel. been working out a little more and have found it impossible to read (even magazines) on an Ellipse or a treadmill when at the gym. messes with my eyes. as you suggested, i should probably give audiobooks a try.
haven’t read the Prydain books but maybe i’ll put them on my list. and i have American Gods and Anansi Boys in my stack. love Neil! π
Dude, how about rule of four, have you read that crap too? I have just finished one book yesterday And I cant help the urge to start another. I guess Dracula is next in line.
No, Rule of Four is still untouched and will probably stay that way in forseeable future as I listened to enough complaints about it from you not to be interested.
Dude, any future at all, stay away from that crap until it burns in the eternal flames of Mount Doom from which it came. Nothing good can come from the seed of Mordor. Even Sauron have refused to have this abomination in his land. This book is boredom incarnate π
good to know, Eddie. i’ll make sure it never goes on any of my reading lists. ever. π
i’ve been without TV for 3-4 weeks now, Maryz, and i still don’t have much time to read. i think the “corporate subliminal control” is still figuring out a way to worm its way into my brain. π
Reread my books all the time, dont have the money to buy new ones, but ive got decent books to reread ^^ Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance and The Dresden Files are my favorites to reread
I started Dresden files a few months ago, really enjoying it so far. I think I’m on book 6 (Blood Rites) at the moment.
cool!
i keep hearing about people reading and loving the Dresden Files, Kerosus. enough so that i might just have to pick the books up. i really dug the Sci-Fi Channel series and since i assume the novels are even better than that, i think this is a must-get.
Yes the books are much much better than the series, the series makes no sense at all if you read the books first haha
rereadign books is vary common for me unfortunatly its do to readign halfway thru a book stopping reading it for a month and forgeting most of it and having to start over from the begining ive been reading the firt book of the honer harington seris for almost 6 months now with great shame.
i hear ya, Drakeye – i’ve done that so many times. i’ve been halfway through the book, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell: A Novel for close to five years. O_o
I’ve borrowed a few books from the boyfriend, and have yet to read them.. yet I just recently picked up a book I’ve ALREADY read. So I think it’s time to pick up the books I have yet to read. That last panel is cute, and I love the colors you used. Thanks for the inspiration to get my bum reading again. π
heheh. yeah, there’s just so many unread books to read and yet (especially now that i’ve been talking about them here) i want to go back and revisit some old favorites, Spanky! it’s kind of a win-win situation, though, since reading and/or rereading are both awesome. π
Oh I do this all the time. I think I’ve reread The Princess Bride about 11 times. I love rereading and discovering stuff I missed in the first pass.
I can dive completely into a book and hubby won’t see me for hours on end.
funny how, most of the time, i’ll get a completely different take on a book during the 2nd pass, Pixie. sometimes even on a 3rd or 4th pass, actually. π
i used to love reading for hours on end and spending entire days consuming books! i really gotta take a vacation and make that happen again, soon.
I tend to avoid that (Rereading books over and over) unless it’s been a while since I last read it. Otherwise I tend to hate the book after a bit due to repetative-ness. *If I spelled ANY of that wrong, sorry, I’m partially asleep.
I do the same thing, well not with the hating and so, but I never read book again unless it have been a while since I have finished it. Its great to read good story once again, but not if you remember everything from like a week ago π
heh. yeah. a week’s too soon.
i don’t think i’ve ever re-read a book right after reading it, Rinthia, but once 6 months-to-a-year goes by, it’s fair game!
I like rereading books. I always find alittle something that I missed the first time through π
yup. for me, i miss stuff especially at the beginnings of books, ESQ. i think i spend so much time concentrating on figuring out what the book is about when i start it, i miss some of the nuance. rereading sometimes gives me a whole new understanding.
-zombie moan- booooooksssss. boOoOoOoOoOoksssssssssssss!lol
*gasp* book zombies are scary, Animie fan.
*hides her first edition HP hardcovers* Noooooo TAKE ME!!!!
HA!
Your comments on Tolkien earn you much love (imagine little fluttery hearts). I am currently re-reading The Silmarillion and Return of the King. I am also reading (for the first time) Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. My parents randomly gave me an iPad when I graduated grad school, which I found a little strange as heretofore I had no interest in one whatsoever, until I played with it and discovered I could read on it! Now I have a bunch of the free books on it, including lots of classics.
Also… I have never read, nor seen, Dune… I attempted watching it once and fell asleep.
thanks for the fluttery hearts, narel! always happy to spread the love for LoTR. π
Heart of Darkness is awesome. go check out the movie Apocalypse Now after you’ve read HoD, even if you’ve already seen it. the book will give you a new understanding of the film and the brilliance of Coppola.
Dune, the movie, is so much better (and understandable!) after reading the book. the first novel is just so dense that a satisfying movie is almost impossible, but that said, i thought Lynch did a great job, and i’ll watch it whenever it’s on. another movie that benefits from reading the source material, most def!
Oh I know how that is! I’ve got PILES of books that I need to read and on top of that, I received a Kindle for christmas (BEST invention EVER!) and after reading a few books on that (mostly done sneakily at work..ssssshhhhh). And have now decided that I cannot use the Kindle until I’ve read the books I have. It was pretty successful for a month, but have been traveling quite a bit and “had” to use the kindle again. People I see on a daily basis make fun of me, I have a paperbook and my Kindle book EVERYwhere I go.
Anyway, got off track there. Dune series is one of my piles and have recently started that. Love it! And also started reading Wizards First Rule. I’ve seen some of the Seeker tv series and figured if the show is as good as I think it is (from the few episodes I’ve seen), that the books have to be amazing!
I gotta say I find the tv show to be pretty entertaining, but when I first started watching it I would become quite irate at all the details they left out and random plot changes/edits. But I kept watching and mellowed out after awhile. The books are good, a little dense if I remember correctly, but some really great ideas. Watching the tv show makes me want to reread the books so I can figure out everything they changed. ^_^
better to read the books first or watch the show first, narel? i’m thinking i’d give the show a shot first to see if i like the premise, and then ease into the books if i’m really into it.
i love that you carry a paperback and a Kindle, Lily! heheh. i don’t have one but i love playing with e-Readers and Nooks when i see them in stores. that e-ink is just so cool.
glad you’re liking Dune. it really is an amazing book and should be read by all science fiction lovers. and never watched any of the Seeker show, but i might just set my DVR for it now.
I love how Jefbot looks so happy and content when he is reading Dune again! Great last frame!!!
thanks, JP! Dune does equal happiness and contentment. π
Dune! Awesome! I totally get it… no matter how many unread books you have just waiting to be opened… You can always count on a classic! Great job Jefbot! Very funny!
yup! you can’t go wrong with a classic, Funnyshaffer. π
You are taunting me with this storyline. As I put the finishing touches on my new “man cave”, I’ve come to precisely the same conclusion. My unread pile is voluminous, yet I itch to go back and read some of my faves.
if you can live with the guilt i say reread some of your faves, Stan! or maybe do a 50/50 split. π
Rarely do I re-read a book. There’s just so much other stuff I need to get to… but Herbert’s Dune is one of the exceptions. One of the greatest litanies written in any language are within that book’s bindings:
I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
i say this as my mantra literally every day, 11TN. good call.
I used to read a couple books a day when I was in high school. I don’t read as much now. Thought I do have a few books on the floor that I borrowed from my high school’s library. The next installment of one of my favorite series came out last week and I still need to get my hands on it. HHGTTG I’ve read like 25 or more times. I have a very well thumbed paperback copy that is taped along the binding. I totally didn’t go around with a towel on the 25th… >.> <..> I’m such a nerd.
You’re not a nerd! You’re one hoopy frood who knows where your towel is! π
yup. π
i’m afraid of what the late fees are gonna be for those library books, DJ! π
so what’s the book you’re talking about from one of your favorite series? and did you find the towel useful when you were wearing it? inquiring minds wanna know…
I borrowed them from my high school library from which I graduated from two years ago, so I’m not even in the system anymore. But I made really good friends with the librarians when I was in high school and now I can borrow all the books I want.
The fourth installment of the Immortal Secrets of Nicholas Flamel came out on the 25th and I forgot about it, If you’d like to read the first one, I have a LEGAL copy of it in pdf form.
The towel was very handy, I had to drive my dad’s big diesel truck and with leather seats and 85 degree weather, it was a good buffer for my back. and it was totally an Optimus Prime towel π
I need to start reading Dune. If only I can do that.
yes! get thee to a library, or a bookstore, or an online booksite, Shion! you won’t regret it. π
Guilty. That’s all. I’m just guilty of all of it. Piles of unread books, re-reading previously read books, re-reading favorite parts of previously read books, watching the movie, and then re-reading the re-read favorite part of the previously read book… I can go on and on like this… π
ha! at least you’re doing a lot of reading, Alana, and that’s the important thing. and that part about “watching the movie, then rereading the re-read favorite part…”? i totally do that, too. so we’re guilty together. π
Rereading is why I have nearly two dozen unread books in a pile. I keep going to conventions, buying books from the authors there and having them sign the books for me (it helps keep the authors coming back when you buy their books). And then I get home and look at my library and I pick up one of the new books … and then I see a Roger Zelazny or Neil Gaiman or Daniel Keys Moran book I haven’t re-read in a while and read that instead. Still, I got three books from Marcon last weekend and I *will* read them this month.
Promise.
Uh … is that a copy of “Lord of Light”?
*frell*
yep, yep: i have so many unread signed books from conventions, too, JM. or i’ll hear someone on the radio or a podcast and order their book and then just put it on the pile when i get it. *sigh* i’ve gotta make an oath to not buy any more books until i take a few off the top of my piles!
nope. not LoL. π
I love to reread books. My FAVOURITE book ever, Fire and Hemlock, has been reread once or twice a year since I discovered it when I was 11 or 12. Every time I read it I pick up on something new.
I went to a second-hand bookshop the other day and I bought two or three new books, which as yet remain unopened in favour of rereading. Shameful, but I have a summer holiday so I bet I’ll read quite a lot of books then π
wow, you guys are giving me so many great recommendations, Maia! never read Fire and Hemlock but i’ll keep a mental note of that next time i’m at the bookstore, before i take that oath i mentioned above. π
i used to get so much reading done during summer vacation! now, that doesn’t exist which is why my unread piles are getting bigger.
I have the perfect recipe for more reading time: lose your job and find that you’re completely incapable of finding another one. I read lots of books!
exactly why i don’t wish too hard for more free time, Sharra! while i would like more time to play videogames, read books and work on my webcomic, i do appreciate having a steady job with a regular income, especially with the way the economy is right now. good luck out there! π
Wow, bot! What a tender lil strip. As usual, the colors, facial expressions, and your details are amazing!!! I also love that you re-read books. I’m lucky if I just READ a book ONCE! ….Wait a minute. There is ONE book that I’ve read multiple times. Can you guess what it is?
Was it written by Mario Puzo?
Hey, how did you know? π
i was gonna guess Children of Corn.
heh. yeah, i like to go a little “tender” every once in a while, to mix it up a bit with all the hijinks, dysfunction and violence seen in most of these strips, MC. glad you liked it! π
Love it man, i can’t seem to let go of old books, especially the Dune series. The Brian Herbert stuff has only ever gotten a second or third read but Dune through Chapter House is always on the re-read list, i’ve lost count of the amount of times i’ve re-read those. My standard comeback for sheople who ask me why i re-read the same novel again and again is “Do you buy CDs or DVDs and only listen/watch them only once?”
Currently on my re-read list are The Death Trilogy by Terry Pratchett ((Discworld) fantasy/comedy), God Emperor of Dune (no surprises there), Vurt by Jeff Noon (cyberpunk), Little Heroes by Norman Spinrad (cyberpunk), and Player of Games, Excession, Use of Weapons and Consider Phlebas by Iain M. Banks ((science fiction) extremely messed up), and that’s not counting all the comix i’ve not read for ages. If you’ve not read any of these yet i would stongly urge you to add them to the un-read pile if they’re not already there.
And finally if you still need a thirty something Scot to stroke your ego, you artwork still make me feel the same way i do when i pick up my newly acquired Gibson SG electric guitar (authentic), being a wage slave IT mage has its perks.
“…and how can this be? For he is the Kwisatz Haderach”
firstly: i dig your new avatar (looks like a goku/penguin hybrid?). it rocks!
and: never read through any of the Brian Herbert novels. worth doing? i read a little of House Atreides but that’s it. i just haven’t really been interested in the prequels or legends series of his. but i am intrigued and might pick up his Hunters and Sandworms novels, just to give the series some closure. of course, i’ll have to read 1-5 to prepare. heheh. i’m all for “messed up” science fiction so might have to check out Consider Phlebas, too.
and thanks for the compliment! always happy to get them, especially from scots! (being part scottish myself, you see). π
and don’t look now but i hold at your neck the gom jabbar.
If you want a good book series try Vampire Hunter D. There’s 15 volumes I’m currently on two.But it’s an excellent story with an excellent author and a nice get away from vampires that sparkle
Does it make you have a gigantic burp?
i wish i could say that it does.
i own and enjoy the VHD anime, IDTMRB, but never read any of the novels. anything to get away from sparkly vampires is worth doing, tho. π
have you even started “Solom” yet?
it’s on my pile, xin!
As the topic of books is on, I must say I have experience with the saying that you shouldnt judge a book by its cover. But you should take this quite literally because you cant judge a book even by the quotes on the cover. I borrowed a book called Rule of Four from Maryz once and the quotes were all about it being similar to The Da Vinci Code but better. I quite liked Da Vinci Code so i started reading and after 300 pages I have refused to read any longer because nothing happened, nothing even remotely exciting, nothing at all. So much for being better than Da Vinci Code… just more boring π
ha! you really hate that book, Eddie!
you’re totally right – you can’t trust those pull quotes on books. i only start to believe ’em if they’re from someone i actually trust! but if they’re just taken from some random newspaper or magazine, they mean nothing to me.
Never got into dune… wasn’t my thing really. but HELL YES on the hitchhikers guide, god that book was great. The movie did a great job trying to copy the book as well. You’ve seen the 6 episode tv series right? THAT’S a great way to spend an evening man π
BBC episodes of HHGttG is the bestest! I love all the nods to the series
they placed in the movie.
Bumpersticker seen:
Friends help you move. GOOD friends help you move books!
on the recommendations of you and Steve, i’ll definitely be checking the series out, Merbrat. i’ve always heard it was really good but just never got around to picking up the DVDs. i’ll have to remedy that.
great bumpersticker! partly due to all the books i have, whenever i move i hire a moving company now so as not to injure myself or friends. π
i haven’t watched the series but i really dug the movie, too, Steve. totally underrated, imho. wish it had done better at the box office so we could’ve gotten Restaurant but oh well, i guess it just wasn’t to be. π
Woot! hurray for books! glad you have more time to read JB, it’s food for the brain.(insert eating sounds………from the brain!….)
hurray! i am getting a bit more reading done, nicobot, but not much. i gotta try harder! my brain needs more NOMs!
As long as you don’t have enough time to read Twilight then you’re okay. (:
already read it, sadly. sister Linda made me read it before all the hype and movies came out. π
NOO!! I read the first book so I could watch the movie. The movie killed it for me and now I absolutely hate anything to do with Twilight. D< Robert Pattinson is NOT hot!
I have a similar problem. At the moment, I have LOTR (six books in one), Clockwork Orange, and Digital Fortress on the to read list (They’re the ones at the top, no idea what’s beneath them)
Oh, and as to the comments regarding Twilight; twilight is a disgrace to vampires everywhere. Legacy of Kain; true vampires. Twilight; fairies.
heheh. i think i’d be surprised by what i might find once i clear the top books too, likeacupcake! i’m sure there are books there that i bought on a whim and have long since forgotten about.
Legacy of Kain, FTW! Soul Reaver was pretty awesome, too. π
You should get on that Patrick Rothfuss, I quite enjoyed it. I’m ashamed to say I never got to Dune >.< I will over the summer hopefully. College leaves little time for pleasure reading *whimper*. Also, if you do find some free time, you should take a look at Piers Anthony's Xanth series. I think you might enjoy them, they are quick humorous reads.
And as a side note…my favorite books get reread multiple times…hehe π
i’ve heard so many good things about The Name of the Wind that i think that’s going to be my next read, Lili. was leaning toward Del Toro’s The Strain, but i think you JEFbot readers have convinced me to go with Rothfuss. π
i consumed a lot of Xanth novels years ago and enjoyed them, but i think i liked PA’s Incarnations of Immortality series even more!
ok well I have to agree there, LOVED the incarnations. I started with xanth, they’re my first love π What other author’s do you enjoy “consuming”? By the way, that is a very good description of what those of us who love books do. I approve.
Sadly I’ve only read Dune once…I need to re-read it and see what I missed the first time…or maybe if I can understand it better…. Great strip…Currently reading The Shadow War trilogy by chris claremont and George Lucas….Continuation of Willow….I highly recommend it π
Dune is definitely worth another read, Eptha. you’ll get so much more out of it on another read-through.
been interested in those Shadow books but never picked them up. it’s been so long since i’ve seen Willow i’d probably need to re-watch the movie first.
Oh if you can find it, read the book….it lets you in on a lot of story that the movie left out (Willow that is)… Like Madmartigan’s and Sorsha’s backgrounds…that and the monster in the lake when Willow rescues Fin Raziel… definately try and find the book… π
Also you might like Raymond E. Feist’s work. You would want to start with Magician: Apprentice. Sorry for double posts. It was an after thought.
always feel free to double and triple post, Tommy! no skin off my nose! π
i’ve read a couple of the Krondor books a looong time ago, and remember enjoying Feist’s work a lot. if i get back into his stuff, i’ll definitely pick up the book you suggested.
Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books are my crack.
My dream house would contain a library at least as big as the one from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Or like the one at Unseen University – so big that it distorts space/time. However, it may be a bad idea for me to be able to travel through L-Space as I have the homing instinct of a brick. :/
I love books and will read almost anything. I can’t list my favourite books because it takes too long and I generally forget to mention loads of them. The same is true when I try to list my favourite authors. So let’s just say that I’m a bibliophile and leave it at that, shall we?
seems a bunch of you readers really like Discworld, AdM! sorry to say my only experience with those novels is through the PC game that came out in the 90s. Discworld is one of those series that i keep meaning to pick up and really should since it’s so renowned. i do like Terry Pratchett’s work, though – his book with Neil Gaiman, Good Omens, was a fantastic read!
i’d love a library like one of the ones you mentioned, too. i could at least get some of my collection out of boxes and onto bookshelves, where they belong!
i’m with you – i don’t think i could pick an absolute favorite book or author since i have so many of them i could name. yes, leaving it at “bibliophile” seems the most sensical thing to do. π
Oh gods, yes! It’d be great not to have to ferret through a pyramid of boxes every time I fancy reading a different book (or trudge to/from the library with about 6 novels). Currently out of storage, I’ve only got a few Pratchett’s, “I, Lucifer”, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Canterbury Tales, the Earthsea books, Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal. All much loved, many times read and have a special significance to me. π
I have played Discworld, Discworld II and Discworld Noir so many times that I could probably play them in my sleep. Never on PC though; I got them on PS1 when they first came out.
I collect all Pratchett’s books, including the non-Discworld ones, as well as anything Discworld based. Good Omens is definitely a favourite – I was raised a Catholic so I particularly enjoy humourous looks at my old religion. ‘Though I tend to get funny looks when I quote that one; I guess it’s not as well know as the Discworld series, which is a shame. In a round-about way, that book led me to to discover the works of Tom Holt, starting with Only Human…
…I should stop now. I could converse on the subject of books forever – I could probably (to quote Douglas Adams’ Deep Thought) “talk all four legs off an Arcturan Mega-Donkey”, but (seeing as I’m not “the greatest, most powerful computer in all creation”) I definitely couldn’t persuade it to go for a walk afterwards, so I’ll cease while everyone possesses the correct number of limbs.
HEY! I hope this gets read, otherwise I might have to wait untill the next strip and wake up at around 3am to post FIRST! like everyone “annoyingly” likes to do. π I don’t remember now how I stumbled upon this strip, but I like to read from the begginning, so I did. Took me awhile though, I’ve been studying for exams. Hahahaha, proscratination for the win!! π
Anywhoo, I would just like to say I’m glad it’s over. I know it’s not actually over, by any means, but I don’t get to continuously read anymore. π Oh well, I’ll just get super psyched for each strip now.
Over all, great job on the art work. I liked the “soft” versions of characters and animals you had awhile back, kind of like the background here. Also, I love getting to see you change as an artist: trying different styles, adding shoulders, etc. This is my favorite strip: http://www.jeffschuetze.com/2010/03/26/jefbot-225_some-rescue/ only because I love Star Wars, and I just quoted this scene yesterday, and watched A New Hope. ^_^
One question for you. It’s my personal opinion, but when I see red noses I think of colds, and runny noses, so I always think your characters are sick. Especially Cel, her nose is exceptionally sick looking. Just a funny opinion. π
Hope you see this!! If not, I might repost it a couple strips from now, just in case.
Continue the awsome work!
Just had to say how impressed I am w/what great readers Jefbot readers are! Makes me feel like giving up some game time and start reading again!:)
mombot, u r awesome.
Mmmmmm……Dune….such a fantastic universe. Have you read the Prequel books ( Butlerian Jihad and such), as well as the books that wrapped up Duncan’s story… well as far as we know it’s been wrapped up.
I’m currently working through the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. They’re not exactly challenging reads, but they’re quite entertaining. Next on my list are Neil Gaiman’s American Gods and George R. R. Martin’s A Game of Thrones. If I like the first in that series, I’ll get the other two and read them. My summer should be long over by then. Sigh. I’m looking forward to Patrick Rothfuss’ next book. He did a reading at a local bookstore, and the little snippet he gave us was just enough to make me crazy wondering what’s going to happen next. Of course, webcomics are constantly on my reading list. π
i have the same problem jb. i also have a stack of warhammer and novel that are still untouched
i think i saw patrick rothfuss’s name of the wind there. read that for i dont know how many times. that is a good book. cant wait for the sequel.
