I totally have an app problem. I just can’t seem to delete any of them off my iPhone, for fear of the slim chance that I might need to use or play them at some opportune time in the future. I mean, some of them have been carried over from my iPhone 3Gs from 2008, and I probably wasn’t using them then. And it’s not like I’ll lose them – iTunes keeps a copy of these apps on my laptop, so I can just re-install them if I feel I’ve made a mistake, but I just can’t get myself to boot them off my device.
How ’bout you BOTreaders? Have an app that you just can’t part with? Have fifty apps you just can’t part with? And this totally includes all you Android and Windows phone users, too. bot just happens to use an iPhone like I do – no judgment here.
I probably have 30 photography apps on my original iPad. It doesn’t even have a camera! (I do have the camera connection kit though.)
well, i’m glad i’m not the only one, Jim. heheh.
and check you out: seeing as you’re the first to comment, you just achieved the Shades of Firsting! wear them well: there’s no app for these babies:
😎
Ah, a Totoro wallpaper. I too have a Totoro wallpaper. This means we must start a secret club.
(I don’t make the rules, I just follow them.)
Totally gonna have to join the club. I love my Totoro wallpaper! 😀
so now we have three people in our secret club, juniperlee! sweet!
woo! totoro wallpaper club! i have a few totoro images i cycle through by a variety of artists, Miracle. maybe someday – when i have some free time – i’ll do my own version of totoro and put it on the site. 🙂
I wholeheartedly approve of this idea.
sweet! if it happens, i’ll put it up on the front page. 🙂
I keep very few useless apps on my iPhone. I save my hoarding for music. 1631 songs, some of which were acquired through the iTunes store. Gotta have enough room!
Also…
Go to bed, Jefbot. Morning comes early.
i have so much music hoarded too, Kizudarake – the iCloud has totally saved me from having to create and update playlists on my phone like i used to do.
and yes, morning did come way too early. especially since i had to get to work early today. blegh. fortunately, we only have a 1/2 day today to ring in the 4th early!
I can relate to this. For a while I couldn’t delete apps. Then I went through a splurg, and brought it down to the barebone essentials. My ipad is a slightly different story since I have more space. Games I can delete once I beat them, but I still have a cooking app on my ipad despite the fact that I haven’t opened it in over a year. I might need it again for a dinner party, you know. It’s a very weird hoarding compulsion.
I also just bought an Samsung Galaxy S3 yesterday. My first Android device. Now I have a whole new set of hoarding to being. 🙂
Amazon App store. They have 1 free “premium app” every day.
this would be the death of me, Pix.
getting my apps down to the “barebones essentials” would be ideal, Saeed! the hoarding compulsion definitely comes into play here, though. *sigh*
ooh, i’ve heard great things about the S3 – let me know how you like it!
It’s my first Android phone coming from over 3 years of iphone usage. And so far I’m really loving it! Gotta be careful with all the apps out there though. 🙂
the S3 looks verrrry nice. if i wasn’t still locked into my contract with my 4s, i might be tempted!
My problem isn’t too many apps, it’s too many videos. Ever since I discovered that there are full-length Classical Music performances and movies on YouTube (some of which can clock in at over 2 hrs!), I’ve been downloading them to my computer and iPad. Unfortunately my iPad only holds 56Gb (actual capacity), and it’s already chock-full of (mostly) Classical music and a score library that would make any conductor worth his baton green with envy. So I’m down to about 3Gb to spare (which I’m saving for app updates), which means that I have to rotate the contents of my video stash. Sweet Luna, I love my iPad; but I wish that Apple had come out with a 128Gb version!
that’s a lot of classical music performances, reynard61! i ran into the same problem when i put a bunch of (clearly not as cultured) tv shows on my iPad – mostly Ren & Stimpy, Samurai Jack and Doctor Who episodes. 🙂
Well, I have other stuff in my external hard drive (a few music videos, the complete “Inuyasha” episodes, “Noein” and a few other things that I like), but I mostly keep the iPad reserved for Classical music. Also, it’s not really a “culture” thing with me. I’m simply a fan of it in the way that a lot of people of my generation are fans of The Beatles or the Rolling Stones or any other Rock group.
i never got into Inuyasha, r61, but i’ve heard good things about it. may have to see if it’s available on Netflix and give it a shot. not that i need another anime series to get into.
In February, I acquired my very first smart phone. I couldn’t figure out how to answer it for a week. And now, I get withdrawal symptoms if I’m more than three feet from it.
But, while I’ve downloaded several free apps, I refuse to buy any. My kids think I’m five seconds away from screaming at people to get off my lawn, and they could be right . . . but I know my weaknesses and I don’t want to star in the first season of A&E’s eHoarders.
LOL! I’m with you on this one. I refuse to pay for anything.
if only i were as disciplined as you, Sarah W! while i do pick up the free app on occasion, it’s those 99 cent sales that get me.
and i’d totally watch eHoarders. 😀
Hey Jefbot,
are you aware that you can download any app you ever purchased on the AppStore as often as you like, right from your phone? That is if you use iOS 5 and (this might be a problem) the app is still available in the store. Using 3G, this even works on the road. Just go to the AppStore, click on Updates, there is a “Purchased” link.
That said, I have a couple of apps that I seldom use, inlcuding a couple of games that I always meant to play but couldn’t find the time. Most of the usused stuff is utilities with very special stuff, like that app that directs the closest taxi to your position – don’t ride a cab that often, still useful to have.
yep, i’m aware, Klongieger – unfortunately, even with this knowledge, i still can’t get myself to delete any apps from my phone!
You are not alone! If I had it my way, I would download a truckload of apps! Sadly, I’m not the owner of the Resolutionary iPad.
heheh. i’m the proud owner of an iPad with the magical Resomolutions, ShadowShuffler, and while i’ve tried to keep most of the apps off of its amazing screen, i’ve still filled up a few pages worth! 😛
I for a while downloaded every single rpg game I could find, play it, enjoy it and then leave it there never to play it again… All the other apps I bought had a purpose and I use them to this very day, the RPGs really had to go though. So last week when my phone was stolen it was a blessing in disguise, I now have none of the apps and I can actually download all of my music, I also decided not to download any of the RPGs again and I’m just getting the apps I used for work now.
Now music on the other hand… 2000 songs isn’t that much right?
at least you’ve played and enjoyed all those rpgs, Satoshieyes! i’m saddened to say that i’ve only played through less than half of the ones i’ve downloaded. which reminds me – i just downloaded Cthulu Saves the World the other day and need to get back to it!
I’m downloading that now.. Darn you
heheh. hope you like it, Satoshieyes!
Ha! I have no such problem! In your face!
… damn I wish I had phone with App compatibility.
as they say – be careful what you wish for, Maryz! 🙂
I actually don’t have any apps, neither do I have an iPhone or any Apple product. probably for the best, or else I would have turned into an app-addict long ago.
I actuall only have a really crappy phone without facebook, twitter, internet, any “real” games, music, or other stuff that a normal human needs on their phone to survive. the only music I have is any thing coming on the radio, and the reception sucks where I live, so yeah it retty much sux…
yes, app-addiction is a sad, destructive thing, DAS. better that you stay away from apps now, so that you aren’t in a 12-step program later. 😉
I actually just got a new phone with apps. The only one I have right now is facebook. Just gotta have self-control… must not install apps!
My problem is that I’m always tweaking my phone which often involves me reinstalling apps. Why must I be such a nerd and have an android?!?
hey, being a nerd is awesome, TCG! 😀
Good Morning BOTiverse and all you BOTvilians!
Just in case I don’t get a chance to say it later, I hope all of our American readers have a Happy 4th of July. Please be safe out there. Don’t blow anything off and find a designated driver because I expect to see each and every one of you back here on Thursday…or Friday….Whichever.
Now this doesn’t mean I don’t adore all you readers from out of the US. I do, I really really do and I hope you guys just have an amazing week.
And now, on to the show…..
Apps….Sweet Jebus do I have apps. I have apps for pretty much everything. Not to mention a HUGE list on the Amazon app store that I’ve downloaded then deleted. It also keeps a record of all apps you have “purchased” (Yeah right! If it’s free, it’s for me!) Right now? I have a percentage calculator I can not live without! I have both the Michaels and Joanns apps, a “Gas Buddy” (times is tough kids), cozi (which I love!), a QRP/barcode scanner, as well as an entire screen of games, just to name a few. So yeah, I gots yer app…right here! *holds up phone*
morning, Pixie! happy 4th back atcha. 🙂
and glad to hear you can relate to the strip. i know i have at least two calculators (not counting the one that comes with my phone) and two QR/barcode readers! ugh.
I have a bunch of apps on my iPhone too, most I don’t use but might (Like Dragon Dictation, only used it a few times but I find it very useful, in theory anyway.) I also have a navigation program I’ve never used, some games that I’ve played once or twice, and Police scanner app I downloaded when there was a bunch of police activity in my neighborhood one night.
There are a few apps I can’t live without. Evernote, IMDB, Kindle, Fandago, Angry Birds and Cut the Rope. Plus my Bank has an app I use often and, of course, the Facebook app which is flaky and I really don’t like it but it’s the only way to check my facebook page without using Safari, which is even flakyer.
i agree about the Facebook app, TPC – there’s no good reason why FB hasn’t made an awesome mobile app for iOS, yet! they better get on that soon, or some other social network’s gonna pick up the slack. i hear FB will be more integrated in iOS6, though, so here’s hoping.
Oh, ‘bot. I feel your pain and I only have a Kindle Fire…they GIVE YOU an app every day! Fortunately, I’ll be able to peel myself away from downloading stuff I don’t need (like a camping checklist, or the kid-friendly apps I’ll see at least once a week), but if it’s a game, it’ll probably wind up in my pile…
i’m totally intrigued by the Kindle Fire, JOE! can’t wait to see what they do with version 2 and i want to play with the nexus 7 which looks pretty Fire-esque. and, yeah – free games are hard to pass up.
I can’t bring myself to delete any game I’ve d/l’ed from Kairosoft.
I love Game Dev Story and all it’s retarded, bastard children.
dude, i love Kairosoft, too! i have active games on Hot Springs Story, Epic Astro Story and Game Dev Story as we speak.
You have to do the racing one. Uh, I think it’s Grand Prix Story. Even though it’s about formula racing, you don’t race. You just make all the decisions, like how to build the car (or two if you decide to have a team), who drives, how to train your drivers and how good your crew is. And research more car parts while trying to win EVERY race.
It’s hard, but it’s a lot of fun.
And then there’s Pocket Clothier. It has so many different aspects I’m still trying to create the perfect clothing store.
man, their stuff is so addicting, McClaud. i’ll definitely give Grand Prix Story a try when i have the time. sounds fun! Pocket Clothier? hmm… i’m intrigued.
you realize you’re not helping my app addiction!!!
What can I say?
I’m an enabler (hence my Kahn avatar).
I used to have a game-app overload until I decided that having 200+ games on a cellphone is utterly ridiculous (Thanks, Free Game of the Day). Right now I have about 20 of the games I did play, even though at the moment I only play Plants v.s. Zombies, Tower Madness and Sentinel 2 (I’m kind of a Tower Defense addict).
nice! love PvZ but i don’t think i have the other two games you mentioned, Chibby. been waiting for Defender Chronicles II to have a 99 cent sale, as i hear it’s a pretty awesome game in the tower defense genre.
The one that I don’t use often that I can’t get rid of is my Tricorder app. It isn’t available anymore, so if I delete it it’s gone! It actually does stuff, not just make cool Trekkie noises (although it does that too). It has a sound level meter, acceleration, magnetic field info, compass and coordinates, cell and wifi signal info, and solar activity. And did I mention the cool Star Trek noises? Yea, that one is on my phone for life.
I don’t have a problem with apps though. If they aren’t carrying their weight, they get booted off pretty quickly to make way for other stuff. I think Bot (and you) just has/have a technology problem in general. 😉
that tricorder app sounds complete awesome, Shanna! why would they get rid of it??? was it unlicensed or something? and Trek-noises are some of the best sound fx around. i used to have my old Treo all decked out with original Star Trek sounds, and it was undoubtedly sweet.
and i’m happy you’re able to do what i can’t! maybe i’ll take inspiration from your strength and delete an app or two tonight. 😉
Yep, I believe it was unlicensed.
GUILTY!!!! I do the same thing. I’ve decided for every new app I get, I have to delete two old ones! Funny strip as always!
that’s a great solution, FunnyShaffer! i might have to try that. of course, at that rate i’d probably still be app-ified until the early 2020s… 😉
Bot should form a new AA (App-a-holics Anonymous?) group. After all, he’s taken that crucial first step.
so true, Striker. and from the looks of these comments, i think i could get a pretty large support group started immediately!
My phone is essentially used for texting, and sometimes calling people (not receiving calls. I’m rarely in the same room and tend to miss them). No camera, no internet access and therefore, no apps. It only has the original ringtones and 3 games… Welp, I’m a technologic australopithecus. But hey, it’s one the (VERY) few things tough enough to survive 6 years with me…
hey, as long as your phone still works for what you need it for – making calls and texting – then there’s no reason for the upgrade, dralou! unless, of course, you want to come over to the dark side and start downloading all the apps to your heart’s content! muahahahaha!!!
I have, let’s see … 294 apps on my phone that I apparently can’t part with. I think I need an intervention.
hey, maybe at the next comic con, we’ll do an intervention together, James. a convention intervention!
I a relatively small collection of apps that I can’t get rid. Angry Birds, Pocket God, Cause of Death, etc…..
Jefbot is quite the hoarder isn’t he? ;P
i think you’ve hit the nail on the head, 52pickup – jefbot’s (and thus, my own) hoarding tendencies extend from the physical world to the electronic world, sadly.
My phone doesn’t do apps. ._.
count yourself lucky, Zaron. so, so lucky…
I have a lot of apps and a 16 gb iPhone……. including my songs, my son’s songs and random pics and videos my son takes when he is playing with my phone…… not a good combination.
ooh, i can’t imagine sharing pics/videos/apps with someone else, DaHoboJoenMe – i have enough problems controlling my own addictions!
Well, my son is 4 so it’s not really a big deal.
I just got my iPhone last week so I’m not very caught up on them. But I do have about 13 apps. Most of them are for pictures though. I wish I could get rid of my main apps, I don’t need Youtube!!
Did you get rid of the nest? I saw your car at your mom’s Sunday and prayed you got rid of it. Or at least moved it.
Ah! I just notice Totoro. <3 He's my lockscreen. <33
totoro rules.
congrats on getting your iPhone, Nat! wait until you start sampling all the free game apps!
yep! i got rid of the nest last wednesday. took a long time cuz i couldn’t decide what method to use to get rid of it (without killing the wasps). next week i’ll document exactly what happened in the comic strip. ask Mombot if you get curious before then. 🙂
Haha! I’m lucky. I have a older model windows phones. there are no longer any apps made for it. Even if I had apps for it I’d probably delete them if I didn’t use them in a month. Mainly because I’d see them as wasting space.
you have more willpower than i do, Descolada! if i could delete all the apps i haven’t used in a month i’d probably be rid of 95% of the apps on my phone.
Looks like someone needs to go to apps anonymous. I had the same problem until my ipod gave me a brand new one called ‘never enough battery’
heheh. i’m good at closing all the background apps when i’m not using ’em, Jiro, but running out of memory is a real possibility. i’ve used about 55gb of 64gb already!
My phone is old fashioned, it makes calls and plays Tetris. That’s about it. I’m happy with it though.
if i had to remove all the games on my phone except a few, Tetris would probably be among the ones i keep, GB!
I tend to only have the apps I’ll need, and I never ever buy any. I have enough things to spend money on (e-books on my Kindle are my downfall, and TV shows (like Sherlock!) on iTunes), so I don’t let myself buy apps. That being said, for a while I had three violin tuners so I could see which one I liked the best. And I had Angry Birds for a while, to entertain my nephew.
Now, I just have the YouTube, FB, Cracked.com, Words with Friends, and a couple other games, and the apps that came with the phone that prove useful sometimes.
downloading only free apps is a good rule, T – makes things easier, at least for your pocketbook! i’ve only bought a few books for my iPad, but seeing as how i’m trying not to buy more stuff that takes up room on my shelves, i think the number of ebooks i buy over the next year or so is going to go up exponentially.
definitely going to check out the Cracked app you mentioned. those guys are hilarious!
Can’t say that it does affect/afflict me. I don’t have a cellphone, much less one of the fancier models. BTW, saw The Amazing Spider-Man tonight. SQUEEEEEE!
i saw it too, KB! i liked it more than i thought i was going to, as the reviews have been mixed. i give it a thumbs up, tho!
I was wondering, who did your website layout? I am always so impressed with the layout and design (and your comics 🙂 ) every time I come here.
thanks for the kudos, Lizzy K! i modified an awesome (and highly recommended) WordPress plug-in called ComicPress, which handles the structure of my website and the database for the comics. all the graphics and stuff are mine. that said, it’s been a long time since i’ve refreshed this site, and some of the seams are beginning to show (e.g. one of the “previous strip” buttons on the homepage actually takes you back to the first strip on the site). in the next month or so, i’m hoping to do a site revamp. hope you like it as much as the current one!
Are there shades of lasts?
Wow, I’ve had a stressful last few days, but I got great news! Mrs. K and i made an offer on a house Monday, heard nothing Tuesday or Wednesday, but today found that they accepted our offer! 3 bedroom, 1.5 bath, 1716 sq. feet, built in 1905, recently remodeled. They asked 99900, we offered 85000. Woohoo!
Now for closing, and moving. New stresses on me!
have a rift mmo server checking app. hasnt played that game in 1 year. havent deleted the app.
anyone here playing diablo 3?
I had to get my phone replaced because I dropped it at work and it went wacky. I don’t even remember most of the apps I had downloaded on that one. I’ve only downloaded like two since I got this thing working again. Shoot Bubble Deluxe and Temple Run
also TOTORO
I finally deleted Angry Birds off my Android phone. It was sooooooo hard but I hadn’t played them for months – but they are still on my iPad, which made taking them off my phone easier. haha
I can’t get into the whole rise of smart phones and these lesser grade apps. To me, the games are the basic ones you will find on any website, fully playable and free. Few of the ones I saw that you would have to buy were actually half as good as some of the general flash games I might find on newgrounds.
As for the other apps, all I have seen are minor novelty’s. All I can see an Ipod as is a over priced music player that forgot that it was a music player.
That said while I have yet to get a smart phone or a ipod or Android I have a strange addiction to laptops and seem to forget that you have limited space on them.
I am Zolen who forgot to type in the name, and have yet to recover my account.
Starwars that i used to know:
just wanted to share that with you
not enough time in the day to use all ur apps? no worries they have an app for that!
Egg Timer is the one I use most often. A very simple short term alarm system. I tend to lose track of time. =)
