Back From SDCC

So the San Diego Comic-Con ended a few days ago but I’m just now feeling somewhat normal and rested – physically, if not altogether mentally – so I thought I’d tell you guys about how the con went before I start feeling the overwhelming need to take a nap again.

Basically? It was awesome. If you’ve read my previous post or have been following my tweets on the subject, you’ll know it’s been a dream of mine since I was a wee bot to someday be on the other side of the booths and tables and be promoting something of my own creation at the San Diego Comic-Con. Well, that day came this year and it did not disappoint (well, for the most part. I’ll get to that later.)

First off, I met a ton of JEFbot readers, so I ended up giving away all the special SDCC BOTtons I had brought to the con. Although the majority of the fans that came by were people I’d never met before, several were people I’d talked to at the cons I’ve done in Seattle, L.A. and Phoenix, so it was cool to not only start new friendships, but continue conversations I’ve had with people from the past. There were even a few that might be familiar to some of you regular commenters. So, thanks to everybody who showed up to chat and/or buy some merch! You guys were my touchstone throughout the weekend, when the sea of anonymous con-goers threatened to drown me behind my booth.

Secondly, it was so much fun being able to hang with my usual crew of convention friends and peers, as well as encounter several I haven’t had a chance to meet in person yet. Special shout-outs to Audra and Scott of nemu*nemu and Kevin (as well as Stan, who I haven’t seen in ages!) from SubCulture, as I’ve “virtually” known them for years but haven’t met them in the flesh until SDCC. Was also cool to finally talk to Kris of Starslip (I still shed a tear for its conclusion) and chainsawsuit, as I think he’s hilarious and has been making some brilliant stuff for quite some time.

Thirdly, you may have thought that I would’ve been able to get away to see some of the awesome panels that were all the buzz coming out of the con. Like the emotional Firefly panel, where tears were shed, or the Hobbit panel, where they showed a bunch of new footage from the upcoming film, or any of the Marvel panels where they announced “Phase 2” of the Marvel Movie Universe. But no. I was pretty much locked behind my booth the entire time, except for the few occasions where I ran out to go to the bathroom or to get some coffee during a lull in the crowds (which generally happened when there was a huge panel going on somewhere.) Thanks to my booth neighbor, Josh, and the occasional BOTfriend for making that happen. I did manage to leave my spot and trek across the convention floor when I heard one of my favorite animators, Chris Sanders, was giving away free prints promoting The Croods, an upcoming film of his. I couldn’t resist buying a Kiskaloo book and mug while I was there, too. That and a beautiful book – Gwendolyn and the Underworld, from my other talented neighbor, Bill - shout out to his awesome girlfriend, Mayka! – were all that I allowed myself to buy, though. Although there was a ton of other stuff I wanted to get, I’ve found that if you don’t put limits on your wallet at these things, you’ll find all the profits you’ve made at your own booth going down the tube.

So, the only disappointment that somewhat sullied (although not enough to ruin it) my first San Diego Comic-Con was that my my books didn’t come in. I don’t want to devote much more than a few sentences to this, as it will just dredge up more Nerd Rage than has already been expended, but yes, I had no JEFbot Volume 1 books at the con, so sincere apologies to all those who came by the BOTbooth expecting them, only to be subjected to my embarrassment, frustration and more (possibly empty) promises. Until I actually hear they’re en route or I have them in my hand, I’ll refrain from making any more proclamations about their availability. That said, I’m hoping I’ll have them for sale on the site soon, or at the very least, by the time my next convention hits in mid-September. Fingers (and toes now) are tightly crossed.

Other than that, the con was amazing to be at. Although the endless throngs of attendees can be overwhelming and exhausting, the sheer excitement generated by so many people also gives SDCC a vibe that I haven’t experienced at any of the cons I’ve done in the past couple of years. Now, the wait list to get onto the main floor is long and there are no guarantees of me getting back into small press, but I’ve already sent in my applications, so here’s hoping for SDCC + JEFBOT 2013! Again, a hearty thanks to everybody – new and familiar – who came by the BOTbooth. You all made this convention the one I dreamed about in my youth and I can’t wait to experience it again!

Okay, now it’s time to shake off my exhaustion and get back to making comics. New strip tomorrow and new storyline soon!

San Diego Comic-Con 2012 + JEFBOT!

Apologies for the strip delay but I’ve been absolutely swamped getting ready for the San Diego Comic-Con (or Comic-Con International: San Diego, as it’s officially labeled) which begins tomorrow!!! (panic, panic.) Now, I’ve been doing comic conventions for almost two years – some big, some small – but nothing compared to the absolute insanity that is SDCC. Much to the dismay of some, this convention has grown immense, and is now a home for not only comics, but the promotion of current and upcoming television shows, movies, videogames and other media. This year alone, some of the presentations I’m most excited about include peeks at The Hobbit, Iron Man 3, Wreck-it Ralph, Elysium and Pacific Rim, among others. On the television side, I’ll be keeping my eye out for Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Doctor Who, Fringe and maybe Arrow. Videogames include all of the big developers for most of your XBOX, Playstation and Nintendo needs. And, of course, the comics contingent includes all of the Big Guns (Marvel, DC, Image and Dark Horse,) medium guns, small guns and this year, well, me!

I can’t tell you what a thrill it is for me to be packing up the BOTbooth, a bunch of prints, BOTtons and books*, driving down to San Diego and meeting a bunch of rabid, screaming fans – hopefully, some of which read JEFbot. Comic-Con was The Ultimate when I was a kid. The biggest, showiest, noisiest festival for all comic fans, film geeks and gamer nerds throughout the world. As I got older it became something I aspired to, but it was always one of those far off aspirations. The kind that are so far off, they’re almost beyond perception. I mean, I’d have to create something first. It would have to be somewhat successful. It would have to have a fan base. Where to even begin? And then JEFbot happened. I didn’t start this comic strip to go to conventions; it was actually kind of a fluke. But all of a sudden, there it was: I had a successful comic with awesome fans that would possibly show up if I started doing conventions.

So, here we are. I’m proud to say I’ll be at the comic convention of my dreams, which marks a personal milestone for me, in the Small Press Pavilion right between the Big Guns and Webcomics sections at Booth O-04. The tickets to the convention have already sold out, months ago, but if you happen to be one of the lucky few (and by few, I mean tens of thousands) who were able to get a ticket, come by the BOTbooth and say “hey!” and give me a high-five (or vice-versa). As always, I’ll be there with free BOTtons (while supplies last) to give away to JEFbot readers as a thank you for helping me get this far. Wish me luck!

* re: books. I won’t actually know if I have any books until I get to the convention, as they’re being shipped directly to the Convention Center from the printer. Being at Comic-Con without books would be… disappointing to say the least, so my fingers are tightly crossed.

JEFBOT + Phoenix Comicon 2012 Wrap-up

Sorry for the delay on the strip – I’ve been in recovery from the Phoenix Comicon the past few days, but I’m nearly there, so expect a comic strip this Friday! Here’s some words about what went down in Arizona:

–
The Phoenix Comicon is over and done with and thus, my second year with the BOTbooth there has come to an end. Has it really been over a year since I started doing this exhibiting thing at comic conventions? Wow. Time does, indeed, fly.

Anyway, I was a bit discouraged going into the convention, since I didn’t have any JEFbot books to sell (I sold out of them at the previous convention in Seattle and my printer couldn’t get the new edition done in time for this con), but I decided to make the most of things by bringing my entire stock of existing shirts, including the enthusiastically received “Quality Time” tee and a new tee I had printed just days before the show, “All Dysfunctions Normal” (artwork pictured). I also brought along all my new BOTtons, BOTprints and printed up some sketchcards and hoped for the best. Well, I’m happy to report this show turned out to be my 2nd most profitable show of all the conventions I’ve done since last year! (#1 still goes to this year’s Emerald City Comicon.) If I had the books there, I’m pretty sure this would have been my most successful show to date.

Part of what made the show such a success for me was my location. Those that visited me in 2011 will remember the BOTbooth being tucked away in a corner, far from the entrance and all but the most adventurous and curious attendees. What saved me last year was Bruce Boxleitner (yep, Tron himself!) buying out nearly all of the “Original Energy Drink” tees from my table. Had that not happened, I might have figured it wasn’t worth exhibiting at this show, which would have been far from the case. Well, after buying that booth last year, I had a bit of seniority this year, which allowed me to pick a booth closer to the entrance doors. I don’t think I could have picked a better space. First of all, I was just a couple of booths away from where most of the attendees funneled in, which meant I had tons of people filing by my booth. Secondly, I was right behind the big Blind Ferret booth which attracted a lot of webcomic readers, which turned out great for me (and would’ve been even greater had I had the JEFbot book!) Thirdly, I had a fantastic booth neighbor – Don from Skullastic – who was quite a showman, and had a cool booth with awesome products which you should definitely check out, especially if you’re in school.

The other part that made the show such a success was of course, the BOTfans, the BOTistas, the BOTomatons! Nearly everyone I met last year came back to the BOTbooth this year to chat and/or pick up some new merch. As much as I met new folks and sold shirts and stuff to people who have never even heard of me or JEFbot (but hopefully they’ll be checking it out now!) the BOTpeeps managed to come out with their support, which always makes the convention more awesome and keeps me powered up throughout the weekend. Of course, I’m not up to the high stature of a Ryan, Lar or Danielle (i.e. I don’t have a line around my booth waiting for a sketch or signature) but I hope to be there someday. And the readers that show up always make me feel like a rock star!

All in all, Phoenix was a terrific convention and one of the most fun, laid back and successful times I’ve had in the BOTbooth. I have to thank my bud, Joe Price, for being of invaluable help to me in the booth on Saturday and Sunday, and also Mombot for pushing me to make the “Dysfunctions” shirt for this convention! And of course, everyone who came by to chat or buy stuff. Looking forward to Phoenix Comicon 2013 and my next con: the San Diego Comic-Con International this July! Hope to see you there!

JEFBOT + Phoenix Comicon 2012

Hey, if any of you BOTistas and BOTistos are looking for something to do this upcoming Memorial Day weekend and live near Phoenix, Arizona, come on down to the Phoenix Comicon for some awesome geekery starting this Thursday, May 24th! I’ll be there at the BOTbooth (#709) selling an assortment of BOTmerch, including new posters, tees and BOTtons! It’s also possible that I’ll have the new printing of JEFBOT VOL.1_All Dysfunctions Normal, which completely sold out at Emerald City Comicon, but due to some shenanigans at the press, I’m not holding my breath. I’ll keep you guys posted, though.

Anyway, in addition to the lure of the BOTbooth, a huge assortment of artists, writers and celebrities will be at the convention this year, including some of my favorites: Wil Wheaton, Jim Cheung, Steve Rude, Brent Spiner, Erin Grey, Dina Meyer, Jamie Bamber, Brett Booth, Whilce Portacio, William Shatner… the list goes on.

So come on down! As usual, I’ll have some special mini BOTtons for JEFbot readers only. So if you come to the booth, say hi and let me know you’re a BOTfan and you’ll get a free, commemorative BOTton! While supplies last, of course.

JEFBOT + Emerald City Comicon 2012

Just wanted to let you guys know there won’t be a Friday strip as I’m in Seattle at the moment for the Emerald City Comicon! The ECCC was my absolute favorite con last year (and my first one as an exhibitor, as some of you may remember) and after visiting the exhibition hall last night, I have no doubt this year will be even better! Firstly, I’m right next to Danielle Corsetto (Girls With Slingshots) and R.K. Milholland (Something Positive) which is all kinds of awesome. Secondly, I’m in a great area on the show floor, so I should be getting a ton of traffic. And thirdly, and maybe most importantly, I know what I’m doing this year. Last year I just got a booth, packed up my stuff and hoped for the best, and it somehow, against all odds, turned out incredibly. With a few conventions under my belt now, and a stronger grasp on what to do and how to do it, I can only imagine this year’s con will make last year’s seem tame in comparison!

As you can probably tell, I’m pretty psyched for this convention, and can’t wait to meet those of you who are able to make it to Seattle. As always, I’ve made a commemorative BOTton that I’m giving to readers who come by the BOTbooth to say hi. Come get ‘em before they’re gone!

Speaking of gone, I need to get showered and down to the convention center soon. I’m still waiting on a big package I shipped from L.A. earlier this week that hasn’t arrived yet, and am starting to get nervous. Bye! I’ll be tweeting from the con here.
